Who we are
SJS Marketing, a limited company registered in England & Wales, is the data controller for the personal data described here.
Email: sam@sjs.marketing
If I emailed you and you're wondering how I got your details
I contact people at game development studios to offer marketing services. If you got an email from me, here is exactly what happened.
What I hold about you: your name, your job role, your work email address, the studio you work for, and publicly available information about the game you're working on — typically its store page, announced release plans, and your studio's public posts about it.
Where I got it: publicly available sources only. Depending on the case that means your studio's website or press kit, your game's Steam page or other store listing, a public Steamworks event listing, a Kickstarter page, itch.io, your studio's public social media, a public grant or award announcement, a conference exhibitor list, or public company records.
I record the specific source for every contact I hold, and the email I sent you names which one it was. I don't buy contact lists, and I don't collect anything from behind a login.
Why I hold it: to assess whether my marketing services are likely to be relevant to your studio, and if so, to contact you about them.
Lawful basis: legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) — my interest in identifying and contacting organisations that may need the service I provide. I've carried out and documented a Legitimate Interests Assessment weighing this against your rights, and you can request a copy at sam@sjs.marketing.
Which rules apply depends on where you are. I check that before contacting anyone.
- UK — I email work addresses at incorporated companies, LLPs and public bodies, as permitted under Regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003. I don't email UK sole traders, unincorporated partnerships, or personal addresses.
- United States — CAN-SPAM applies. No prior consent is required. Every email carries my postal address, identifies itself as a commercial message, and has a working opt-out that I action well inside the ten business days the law allows.
- France, Netherlands, Ireland and the Nordics — business addresses only, on the legitimate-interest basis described above.
- Canada, Australia and New Zealand — only addresses a studio has itself published publicly, and only about matters relating to that role.
- Germany, Austria and Italy — I don't send marketing email to studios in these countries at all. Their rules require prior consent, so if you're there and you've had a cold email from me, something has gone wrong and I'd like to know.
What I don't do
- I don't track whether you open my emails. Open tracking is disabled.
- I don't track whether you click links.
- I don't sell, rent or share your data with anyone for their own purposes.
- I don't use your data for automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
- I don't collect anything beyond what's listed above — no phone numbers, no home addresses.
How to make it stop
Any of these, and you're removed permanently:
- Click the unsubscribe link in any email
- Reply with "no", "unsubscribe", or anything to that effect
- Email sam@sjs.marketing
Removals are actioned within 24 hours, and once removed you stay removed — across every campaign, permanently. I keep a minimal record of your email address for the sole purpose of never contacting you again. If you'd rather I deleted that too, say so and I will, though I then can't guarantee your details won't resurface from a public source later.
I send a maximum of three emails. If you don't reply, it stops automatically.
How long I keep things
| No reply, or you decline | 24 months from the last email, then deleted |
| You opt out | Email address only, kept indefinitely so I never contact you again |
| You ask for erasure | Deleted within 30 days |
| You become a client | As set out in the client agreement |
Who I share it with
Only service providers acting on my instructions, under contract, not for their own purposes:
- Microsoft 365 (Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd) — sends and stores email
- Notion — stores contact records
Where a provider stores or processes data outside the UK, that transfer is covered by the safeguards in that provider's own data processing agreement — in practice the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
Your rights
- Object to this processing — the most relevant one here. I'll stop immediately, no reasons needed
- Access the personal data I hold about you
- Have it corrected if it's wrong
- Have it erased
- Restrict how I process it
- Be told where I got it — which the email tells you anyway
Email sam@sjs.marketing for any of these. I'll respond within one month.
